Air Quality

 Perceptions

RTA

The RTA realise that cars contribute heaps to air pollution, so they are committed to effectively managing the roads and traffic systems to improve air quality to minimise impacts on air quality. They have a major role in implementing the NSW's air quality management plan, Action for Air. The plan highlights the RTA's role in reducing vehicle emissions through:

  • Advocating for new, tighter national fuel quality and emissions standards for vehicles.
  • Reducing emissions from in-service cars.
  • Promoting alternative fuels.

Other than the governments Action for Air management plan, the RTA have also been committed to improving road tunnel ventilation. Also, knowing that residential wood burning contributes up to 40% of winter air pollution in the metropolitan area of Sydney, they had started a Solid Fuel Heater Buy Back Program which ended in 2007.

BP

BP, the fourth largest company in the world and the biggest corporation in the UK acknowledge that air pollution is a major environmental risk to health causing premature deaths, heart disease and some forms of cancers. They manage their emissions to air through their local operating management systems. They develop air emission management plans locally with the aim of delivering compliance with all applicable legislation. On the right shows the amount of air pollution(in tonnes) they emit which seems to have increased between 2008 and 2009.
